The King Valley in Victoria, Australia is to the North/East of Melbourne - about 2.5 to 3 hours drive. The King Valley wine region stretches from Wangaratta to Whitfield and includes the villages of Moyhu, Cheshunt, Oxley, Mynhee and Milawa. The total vineyard area in the King Valley is 1,800HA - about half of all planting in the total NE Victoria.
BellaRiva is situated at Moyhu - a small town in the central part of the valley. Planted in 1994, the BellaRiva vineyard is the fourth vineyard making up the De Bortoli Family Estates that include Riverina, Yarra Valley, Hunter Valley and King Valley.
The BellaRiva vineyard is approximately 580 acres with 422 acres under vine. The white varieties planted include Pinot Grigio, Moscato Giallo, Vermentino, Semillon, Chardonnay and Riesling. The red varieties include Sangiovese, Merlot, Shiraz, Cabernet, Durif, Tempranillo and Pinot Noir. These varieties are planted on flood plains where the soil is well drained and quiet deep with large river pebbles surrounded by fine red soil. The soils are sandy loam on lower parts of the the vineyard to clay loam on the high parts. A full year temperature can vary 50 degrees, minus 3 and 4 in winter to 46 and 47 degrees in Summer.
